Born Elaine Furstenberg in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1927; Jewish family; father's career as a plumber; mother's career as a secretary; first marriage to Alvin Lustig in 1948; second marriage to Arthur Cohen in 1956; education: H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College, B.F.A. University of Southern California; career: school teacher, freelance graphic designer, painter, book dealer Ex Libris; art exhibitions: first solo artist exhibition at John Bernard Myers Gallery in New York City, first exhibition of female artists at Mary Boone Gallery in New York City; awards: American Academy in Rome, Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, International Association of Art Critics Award; discussion of style and artistic ideas: abstract geometry, hard-edge, minimalism, constructivism, influence of Bauhaus, influence of abstract expressionists, typeface, alphabet and letters, photography collages, ephemera collages, shape generation; discussion of artistic issues: dichotomy between art and design, growing art world and contemporary exhibition politics; reminiscences of colleagues.
